How SXSW Grew with Streaming
South by Southwest (SXSW) is one of the most beloved music, tech, and film festivals in the world. This documentary looks back at how and why SXSW embraced streaming. That shift extended the reach of SXSW to new viewers around the world.
Introduction
SXSW is held annually in Austin, Texas, where the entire city revolves around the festival. It brings together leaders across music, film, and technology to share ideas, showcase work, and shape what’s next. The purpose: to help creative people achieve their goals.
A Better Experience
To expand the experience beyond the in-person event, SXSW made parts of the event available both physically and virtually. Live and on-demand content gave the community access to programming they may have otherwise missed.
Better Content
One of the challenges SXSW faced with streaming was that every session happened live. Each session was captured, recorded, and then turned around for the apps’ on-demand library. In addition, SXSW had multiple delivery platforms to produce for: Roku, Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV.
Better Growth
SXSW needed a vendor that could bring their event content online and onto set-top devices. Previous vendors struggled due to the bespoke nature of SXSW’s technology and the scale of data produced by the event. Brightcove was up to the challenge and committed to delivering a high-quality experience.
